Who is Saint Luke Presbyterian?
St. Luke Presbyterian Church has been a home for people in Amarillo and the nearby area since the early 1960s. The church has grown over the years, and has welcomed people who want to explore and grow their faith with other Christians. Click here for a summary of our early history and here for what has happened at St. Luke since 2014. Throughout our time in Amarillo, our focus has been to spread Christian love, continuing the rich history of the Presbyterian Church USA in Amarillo and the surrounding communities.
Early History: St. Luke began when families from Covenant Presbyterian Church, which was getting full, started a new church in 1961. The church officially became St. Luke Presbyterian Church of Amarillo, Texas on March 4, 1962. In 1968, Amarillo’s economy struggled, causing many to move away. Two other Presbyterian churches in Amarillo closed, and many of their members started worshiping at St. Luke.
Since 2014: In 2014, the Presbyterian Church USA voted to welcome same-sex couples and people of all gender identities into leadership roles. St. Luke gained new members but also lost some who did not agree with these changes. The church supports LGBTQIA+ inclusion and is part of the Open and Affirming Congregations group. The building was expanded and remodeled, and a group of United Methodists started a new congregation and now share our building for worship and events.
